UNIVERSITY NEWS | Being prepared means thinking about circumstances that we pray we never face. As part of Loyola Marymount University’s responsibility to safeguard our students, faculty and staff, drills are conducted to analyze responses in real time. These periodic drills also provide a blueprint for the Department of Public Safety and the university’s administration to follow in case of emergencies.
LMU’s annual Active Shooter/Shelter in Place Drill will be held Feb. 27, 2018, at 10:05 a.m. and again at 6:15 p.m. Also, on that same day, LMU Public Safety is partnering with the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles Fire Department to host the annual Response Demonstration from 11 a.m. to noon in Roski Dining Hall in University Hall.
“It is important to emphasize that there are no known threats to campus,” said Simran Sandhu, emergency management specialist with the Department of Public Safety, “and we have no indication that LMU is at risk for an active shooter incident. Given the current climate and events around the globe, particularly at schools, we believe that incorporating active shooter preparedness at LMU is the prudent and responsible thing to do. By working together, we strengthen the university’s capability to prepare for, respond to, and recover from an emergency.”
February is Active Shooter Preparedness Month, so the drill and the demonstration will showcase how the LAPD responds to an active-shooter call, in addition to LAFD’s tactics in responding to a mass patient/mass casualty incident, adding greater appreciation about the importance of active-shooter preparedness.
A public address announcement and an LMU Alert via phone call, text and email will initiate the morning drill. The evening drill will be initiated by a public address announcement. Each of these communications will emphasize that this is a drill. For everyone’s safety, the campus community as a whole is urged to dedicate one minute to discuss what RUN – HIDE – FIGHT looks like in a dynamic active shooter incident.
