Junior setter Tess Reid represented LMU volleyball and competed with the U.S. Women’s Collegiate National Team in Detroit last week. Reid, one of four setters on the team, was named to the 24-player squad in April. The CNT-Detroit squad is part of USA Volleyball’s High Performance pipeline and is considered a second tryout for the U.S. Women’s National Team.
LMU athletics also has a coach on the national scene. Agustin Moreno, head coach of women’s tennis, also serves as the head coach for Mexico’s national team. Mexico secured an immediate return to America Zone Group I after defeating Peru in their Zone A promotional playoff June 23-24 at Club Deportivo La Asuncion in Metepec.
Women’s tennis also saw one of their own win on the courts. Competing alongside Washington State’s Michaela Bayerlova, sophomore Eva Marie Voracek captured the doubles title at the Jablonec Women Open 2018 in the Czech Republic. The Championship Match pit the duo against No. 4 seed Radka Buzkova (CZE) / Aneta Laboutkova (CZE), and after a hard-fought 7-5, 4-6 first two sets, Voracek and her partner managed a 13-11 victory in the tie-breaking third stanza to claim the title.
On the men’s tennis side, LMU’s Ethan Prost captured the 2018 ITA Summer Circuit Tournament title after defeating Fernando Fonseca, 7-6 (5), 6-4. Prost, who completed his freshman campaign in 2017-18, played five total matches en route to capturing the title, beginning his run with a 7-5, 6-3 triumph over Max Hoffman in the round of 32. The round of 16 saw the native of Peoria, Arizona, take down Daniel Traxler, 7-6 (3), 6-3 to advance to the quarterfinals where he dispatched Jed Kronenberg, 7-6 (4), 6-4. Playing in the semifinal round, Prost knocked off Gavin Spencer in a hard-fought match, 4-6, 6-2, 10-7, sealing a spot in the championship.
Playing just their second AVP event together, former Lion greats Emily Day and Betsi Flint combined to win the 2018 AVP Beach Volleyball Seattle Open last weekend. The second-seeded duo won the women’s title over third-ranked April Ross and Caitlin Ledoux in three sets. The pair recovered after losing the first set, 21-19, then won the final two frames, 21-19 and 18-16, and have qualified for the main draw of the FIVB four-star event in Poland.
The men’s basketball team announced that they have been selected as one of four host institutions, and one of eight programs, set to compete in the 2018 Jersey Mike’s Jamaica Classic from Nov. 16-18 in Montego Bay, Jamaica. The Lions will share hosting duties with Georgetown University, Ohio University and the University of South Florida. The remaining four university participants will be announced at a later date.
After completing his senior year with the baseball team in 2018, LMU right-hander Tyler Cohen has signed a free agent contract with the Texas Rangers, it was announced on June 20. Cohen joins Niko Decolati (Colorado Rockies) and Billy Wilson (Cleveland Indians) as players from the 2018 squad who have made their professional debuts this summer.
The Golden Coast Conference has named 12 Lion women’s water polo players to the 2018 GCC All-Academic team. LMU’s honorees include Reagan Denny, Abbey Grosse, Kiana Harpstrite, Katie Hungerford, Morgan Molloy, Melyssa Moore, Lauren Owens, Alena Sanchez, Hana Vilanova, Claire Wright, Serena Zafiris, and Julie Zanobini, after the dozen secured GPAs over 3.0 and competed in over 50 percent of the team’s games.
Lion swimmers have been recognized for their academic successes. The College Swimming Coaches Association of America recently announced its Scholar All-American Teams for spring 2018, and LMU swimming tied for 126th on the list amongst 175 Division I women’s swimming and diving programs with a team GPA of 3.37.
