This week, we celebrated the launch of The Coelho Center for Disability Law, Policy & Innovation, an exciting new interdisciplinary collaboration.
Monday’s inaugural symposium, “Disability Impact: Breaking Through Barriers to Civic Leadership,” brought together more than 100 thought-leaders at our new SFTV campus in Playa Vista for a discussion on how to increase the influence of people with disabilities at the ballot box and beyond. Inspired by its founder, legendary alumnus and former House Majority Whip Hon. Tony Coelho (LMU ’64), the event took a hard look at advancing the causes of the disability community via new approaches to invention and image-portrayal. Meanwhile, the results unveiled from a Coelho Center poll will continue to drive a conversation on the influence of the disability community as a voting bloc. That evening, we also had a gala celebrating the launch of the Coelho Center, bringing many new friends into our LMU community. The day received great attention in a variety of news outlets, including KNBC-TV and Law360.
The Coelho Center is a University-wide Center that is housed at Loyola Law School. Its Director, Katherine Perez, has already been convening an advisory board of LMU colleagues from all of the schools and colleges.
