Five Facts about LMU’s Recording Arts Program

LMU SCHOOL OF FILM AND TELEVISION | Loyola Marymount University’s recording arts program is about creating and sharing the glorious sounds you hear in your head with the world. The program takes a holistic approach to audio, and each student is required to spend equal time working on film, live, and studio audio before they can obtain their degree.

Due to its attachment to the world-class School of Film and Television (SFTV), sound is taught as a component to enrich visual storytelling. The music portion enriches the dynamic between the producer and musical artist, and these fundamental tools allow for a successful framework to the creative powers of sound.

1. SFTV is one of the few major film schools that offers a degree program in recording arts. This unique combination allows for collaboration with the most gifted animation, film production, and screenwriting students in the country.

2. It’s a hands-on discipline, so SFTV keeps cohorts small at around 15 students. The average student-to-teacher ratio is 12:1, which leads to productive and nurturing relationships between professors and peers.

3. Students study both sound editorial for film and television and music engineering/recording. There’s real-life experience working sound on film sets, using current production sound equipment, and producing live concerts (like the one below!) on campus using our Digico SD9 digital console and Dynacord Cobra speaker system.

4. After graduation, LMU recording arts alumni have gone on to work in..

  • Re-recording mixing for film and television
  • Production sound recording/mixing
  • Music scoring engineering
  • Live sound reinforcement for concerts
  • Sound design/mixing for theme park attractions
  • Audio for gaming
  • And more!

5. Some equipment stats for the recording buffs:

  • LMU’s music studio boasts a 32 channel API Legacy Plus console and custom ATC speakers, plus additional Genelec speakers
  • Live concert sound: Digico SD9 console
  • Film post-mixing:  24 channel Avid S6 consoles and Avid C-24 consoles
