2021 Common Book Collection: Black Experiences / BiPOC Voices

UNIVERSITY NEWS | Confronting racial injustice empowers us, as Lions, to move closer toward “creating the world we want to live in” (LMU Strategic Plan, 2021-26). This year’s Common Book Program is developed to do just that. Under the guidance of Black at LMU student leadership we have selected a list of five books, instead one book, that share the theme of exploration and reflection on the Black experience.

  • “Americanah,” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (MacArthur Fellow 2008)
  • “Homegoing,” by Yaa Gyasi
  • “How to be an Antiracist,” by Ibram X. Kendi (MacArthur Fellow 2021)
  • “The Sum of Us,” by Heather McGhee
  • “White Tears / Brown Scars,” by Ruby Hamad

In light of recent campus events, it is our goal to expand our campus discourse around race, racism, diversity, and inclusivity and to fold new voices into the conversation. We invite you to join us.

You can find a copy of each of book on reserve at the William H. Hannon Library, which you can check out for three hours at a time. You can also purchase one or all of these five books at the LMU bookstore, or complete this form to receive a free copy of your book of choice. Copies are limited and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, so don’t delay, submit your form today.
