When a member of the Loyola Marymount University community – student, faculty or staff member – travels abroad on LMU-related business, they plan, prepare, think ahead and take precautions. But … things don’t always go as smooth as they should.
Illnesses and accidents can happen. For those and other unforeseen circumstances, LMU has contracted with a company that covers the backs of those LMU community members – especially students – representing the university abroad. The company, International SOS, will be working closely with LMU’s Study Abroad Office, Risk Management, and other departments involved in international travel to assure safe trips abroad.
“Emergency situations in foreign countries can be overwhelming,” said Doug Moore, the university risk manager in the Financial Division. “But iSOS can help our students, faculty and staff navigate health and security issues virtually anywhere in the world.”
International SOS, the world’s leading medical and travel security risk services company with clients across the globe, provides emergency medical insurance for all LMU students, faculty and staff members while they are overseas on an LMU-related program or trip. The insurance also offers security evacuations in the event of natural disaster or civil unrest.
The company has more than 1,000 locations in 90 countries and more than 11,000 employees, including 1,400 doctors and 200 security specialists, providing a broad range of preventive programs informed by their in-country expertise. They offer medical and security advice, emotional support, and referral services 24/7, no matter where an LMU traveler is. iSOS also has an app, which is recommended, that offers timely medical and security updates on your location. The app, “International SOS Assistance,” can be downloaded from Apple, Google Play or Microsoft. A traveler can log in using their university email address.
