5 Things You May Not Know About the William H. Hannon Library

WILLIAM HANNON LIBRARY | This week is National Library Week! To celebrate, here’s a list of five fun facts you may not know about Loyola Marymount University’s William H. Hannon Library.

1. Even though we add 15,000 new books to our main collections each year (the ones you would see in the library’s top three levels), most of our printed materials are stored two floors below ground in our basement inside the bluff. With all our collections being held on site, we able to provide student with quick access to low-use materials that otherwise would need to be stored offsite.

2. Our Archives & Special Collections department owns a diary of a Civil War soldier, gifted to us by the family of one of our students, Lindsay McConnell ’21. It’s our first diary directly connected to a LMU student’s personal history.

3. More than half a million visitors come to the William H. Hannon Library each year. In 2019, 563K visitors came to the library, 5784 students attended a workshop by a librarian, 14,397 questions were asked at our information desk, and more than 5500 people attended a library event.

4. Students can get research support 24/7 through our online chat service. We work with the other AJCU libraries via our collaborative “Ask-A-Librarian” chat service in order to provide round-the-clock virtual support for not only our students but also other students at other AJCU institutions. That’s collaborative #JesuitEducation in action!

5. We have one of the first “digital” (not on tape) editions of Star Wars. On laser disk. #HanShotFirst (in the image, there is a CD for scale)
