SFTV Graduate Student Gains Emmy Experience Through Internship Program

GRADUATE STUDENT PROFILE | In the summer of 2019, SFTV graduate student Jamil Akim O’Quinn ’21 was selected as part of a cohort of 50 students for the Television Academy Foundation Paid Internship Program in the development scripted series category. He was placed at Valhalla Entertainment for eight weeks. In addition to gaining invaluable experience in development, he was introduced to major key players in the entertainment industry.

Through the internship program he was afforded the opportunity to attend the Creative Arts Emmy Awards, and also, work on the production team of the Primetime Emmy Awards. While at the Primetime Emmys Jamil was showcased in a Television Academy Foundation Red Carpet Interview done by a fellow alumni of the internship program. Being part of the Television Academy Foundation Internship program was an honor and as an alumni the organization is still working to ensure that Jamil achieves his goal of creating content that gives voice to those that are systemically voiceless.

As graduate assistant in the Career and Professional Development office, O’Quinn is spearheading a brand awareness session on LMU’s campus that will showcase the Director of the Television Academy Foundation Internship who will inform students of the programs that are offered through the Television Academy Foundation, and how to be a strong candidate for the 2020 Internship cohort.
